Friendly Driving in Texas

At first thought, it would seem like being friendly while you're driving in Texas is a good thing. Maybe you're waiting in line at a red light somewhere in downtown Houston and you notice someone in a parking lot, trying to get onto the roadway. The light turns green and everyone ahead of you moves forward, but you hold your ground momentarily in order to let that driver onto the roadway. It's certainly a kind gesture.

People who are usually kind to others in such a way don't realize that they're being both unkind to the drivers behind them and they're actually impeding the flow of traffic. Of course, anytime someone impedes the flow of traffic, there are other drivers that launch into angry vernacular and gesticulation. Someone might give his or her car a brief jolt forward to try to scare the impeding driver into moving. Others might just attempt to go around the entire lane of traffic in order to get ahead of the impeding driver.

In this situation, the driver attempting the kind act has the right of way and he or she should take it. While it's nice to give someone an opportunity to get onto the roadway, you can often cause more problems than you're solving. Simply abiding by the rules of the road in every situation, even if it means forgoing a courteous act, can often be the safest way to drive.
