Dealing With Texting and Driving

A popular distraction for drivers in this day and age is texting. People receive, type, and send text messages while they're driving with little caution. While one step to driving safe is to cease to perform this dangerous task while driving, you can also educate yourself and learn to recognize certain driving behaviors so that you may avoid those on the road performing this dangerous routine.

First of all, if you're in a vehicle with someone that is doing such, you should get them to stop immediately. Offer to text the message for them as a strong gesture, inform them how dangerous it is and that you could text for them. You could be saving your own life.

Discourage those you know and also those you don’t. It is a great idea to refuse to ride along with drivers who selfishly continue this act after your plea for them to terminate their engagement. If texting is more important to them then paying attention to the road, you could offer to drive.

If you're driving and see someone in another car texting while driving then you should do what you can to get away from them. You can get in another lane, slow down to get further behind them, or speed up to get further ahead. If you're going to speed up to get off them then be sure you don't exceed the speed limit while doing so.

Whether you move ahead or fall behind, be sure to get far enough away that you can safely react to anything that the driver does. Watch out for the driver because they are not watching out for you and most likely they are not aware of their surroundings.
