The idea of this community matured in 1924 when the City of Houston declined to extend its utility lines to facilitate the newly developing town. Subsequently, the President of The Houston West End Realty Company, A.D. Foreman, donated $100,000 of his own income to bring electrical, water, and telephone services to West University Place. In 1939, the City of Houston attempted to consolidate with West University Place, however, the city refused and adopted a city council, mayor, and city manager alternatively.

In the western shadows of Rice University, this city serves as a bedroom community and is also well known for shopping, restaurants, and upscale nightlife. Now, the close-knit suburb also has a Walk Score of 74 out of 100, which means many places can be easily traveled to on foot. The West University Elementary is also prided with a rank as one of the top ten schools in the state.
