Texas Abandoned Vehicles Defined

In the state of Texas a vehicle is considered to be abandoned if the vehicle meets any one or combination of the following conditions:

  1. The vehicle is more than five years old and inoperable.
  2. The vehicle is more than five years old and is illegally parked on public property for more than 48 hours.
  3. Remained on private property without the consent of the property owner or person in charge for more than 48 hours.
  4. It has been left unattended on the right-of-way of a county, state, or federal highway for more than 48 hours.
  5. It has been left unattended for more than 24 hours in the obstruction of traffic on the right-of-way of a turnpike project constructed and maintained by the Texas Turnpike Authority division of the Texas Department of Transportation, or a controlled-access highway.
