Wise County Texas Defensive Driving

Wise County is known for there grand historical Texas landmark building from the “Administration Building, Decatur Baptist College” which was built in 1893 and was the first private college in the U.S. It’s now used for a county museum and is known as a family research building, plus its museum exhibits located on the first floor hold antique household furnishings, a picture gallery, and an archive library. The second floor holds the G.C. Rann Auditorium and Lost Battalion Room, and the third floor holds firefighter equipment that is displayed all in this building. This place is called “The Heritage Museum.”

“Woody Cabin”, Sam Woody was a Tennessee pioneer who came to Wise County and built the cabin located near Deep Creek. This cabin became the very first dwelling in Wise County. Woody who guarded the pioneer settlement, became part of a ranger unit and served in the confederate army in the civil war (1861-1865). This cabin was moved from Deep Creek to the museum grounds in October 2006.

The Waggoner Mansion is also known as “El Castile.” This is a historic mansion built in 1883 by the waggoner family but was then purchased in 1942 by a Phil Luker. This striking architectural home is privately owned and not open to the public.

“Deep Creek Community” Tom McCarroll and Andrew Mann gave land to the community for a cemetery and a church along with a schoolhouse was built in 1854.
