Scurry County is in northwest Texas between Midland, Lubbock, and Abilene, just north of I-20. The county seat of Snyder was originally a trading camp established in the late 1870s that provided supplies and merchandise for buffalo hunters. Before the railroad came to the county, most supplies were brought in by wagon drawn by oxen that could pull 25 tons. When the railroad came in in 1909 commerce picked up greatly and Snyder and other towns built along the railroads experienced significant growth and increased prosperity.
