The late 1800s saw lots of war and conflict in the county between settlers and Indians as white buffalo hunters threatened to deplete the supply of this vital resource. The US Army spent years harassing the dwindling Indian population in attempts to drive them from the area which were eventually successful. In the early 1920s, the railroad came to the county, and roads and highways increased through the 40s. In the late 1930s oil was struck and by the 1970s millions of barrels had been pumped. By the 1980s the economy was booming.
