Originally established as a resort town called Clifton-by-the-Sea, but a resort on the bay was not as popular once rapid transportation was introduced. The city did have a resurgence after World War II that has continued through today due to the multitude of petrochemical plants nearby. Bacliff has also survived quite a few punishing blows from hurricanes including Hurricane Ike, that have knocked the city down, but has always picked itself back up.
