How to Handle Texas Abandoned Vehicles

In the state of Texas a vehicle is considered to be abandoned if the vehicle is inoperable, more than five years old, and meets any one or combination of the following conditions:

  1. It has been left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours.
  2. Remained illegally on public property for more than 48 hours.
  3. Remained on private property without consent of the property owner for more than 48 hours.
  4. It has been left unattended on the right-of-way of a county, state, or federal highway for more than 48 hours.
  5. It has been left unattended for more than 24 hours on the right-of-way of a turnpike project constructed and maintained by the Texas Turnpike Authority division of the Texas Department of Transportation, or a controlled access highway.
