Texas Defensive Driving Tips

Sometimes a collision is unavoidable.  On those occasions, there are certain things you can do to minimize the damage done to your vehicle, yourself, and your passengers.

1. Always Have a Way Out: When driving, you should always be paying attention and keeping a safe distance between you and other vehicles.  By doing this you can recognize places you can move your vehicle in order to avoid a direct collision.
2. Slow Down: When you can't find an escape and you're definitely going to collide with something, you should slow your vehicle down as much as possible.  Any reduction in speed will reduce the damage done to you, your car, and your passengers.
3. Aim Your Car: If you have to hit another vehicle then aim for spots that are designed to take impacts.  Instead of hitting a car from behind, you can try to turn your car towards their taillight instead of their license plate.  It will be less damaging to both vehicles.  If you're going to be in a T-Bone collision, try to aim for the trunk or engine compartment instead of the cab of the car.  If it's a head-on collision then veer right, away from oncoming traffic.  Hopefully, the worse you'll do is hit their driver's side headlight with your driver's side headlight.
4. Hit What Does the Least Amount of Damage: If you're only option to avoid colliding with another vehicle is to collide with something else then pick the object that will do the least amount of damage.  For example, if your only options are to swerve towards a tree or a trash can in order to avoid another vehicle then aim for the trash can since that would do less damage than the tree.
