Crimes Versus Crashes

In the United States, there are more accidents, injuries, and deaths caused by drivers than there are by criminals. While there is a murder every thirty-five minutes, there is a fatality caused by a car accident every sixteen minutes. An aggravated assault occurs every thirty-nine seconds, but an injury from a car crash happens every fourteen seconds. Property crimes happen every twenty-four seconds while property damage caused by crashes happens every eight seconds.

Crash prevention is now possible through complex, but feasible, and robust electronics. One of the most significant advances in crash prevention, which has been on the market since 1995, is Electronic Stability Control (ESC). ESC, known by names like Stabilitrak, Vehicle Stability Program, Electronic Stability Program, etc., work by using ABS brakes as a foundation with the addition of sensors measure steering wheel angle, yaw rate, acceleration, and turning force. Software algorithms interpret the sensor data and determine whether the vehicle is traveling the way it should. If not, the system automatically activates the brakes on one or more wheels or activates the throttle slightly to bring the car back in line. Analysis of recent real-world data shows significant reductions in single car crashes for vehicles with ESC.

But electronics do not replace a human's need to be safe. People still need to perform certain tasks while driving to prevent crashes. As a driver you can follow the reaction distance rule, keep all aspects of your vehicle well maintained, and remove anything from your field of view and out of earshot that may distract you while driving.
